What Is Argolis

Argolis is a peripheral unit of Greece, it is in the eastern part of the Peloponnese region and borders Arcadia, Corinth, the Saronic Gulf, and the Argolic Gulf. Its capital is Nafplio.

This prefecture has a diversity of landscapes, mountains can be found to the west, east, and northeast while the beaches take place on the coasts to the south and east. It has a large area dedicated to crops in the central part of its territory.

Argolis is also a place where more than a hundred archaeological sites rest, among which places like Mycenae and Argos stand out.

A History of Thousands of Years

Argolis was inhabited since prehistoric times. The name of the region is due to the city of Argos, considered the oldest city in Greece and the birthplace of many mythological heroes.

In the year 1600 BC, the Mycenaeans settled in Argolis, being the first properly Greek people. They were a warrior civilization and lover of the arts and formed commercial contacts with the Minoans who inhabited Crete.

It is around the year 146 BC that the region passes under Roman control and after a while, it is invaded by the Turks, approximately in the year 1640.

Between the years 1833 and 1899, Argolis was part of Argolidocorinthia, which included several Greek cities in the same region. In 1949 it separated from Corinth and became just Argolis as it is known today.

Myths and Legends of Argolis

Argolis is a region loaded with many Greek myths and legends. Many of its cities gave rise to heroes or battles that today are read about in the most fascinating books.

It is said that Argos, the oldest city in Greece, was founded by Inacus, he arbitrated in the dispute between the gods Hera and Poseidon for control of Argolis and concluded that it was going to be Hera's causing Poseidon to dry up the river’s region of.

Mycenae, an ancient city in the region that today serves as an archaeological site, is also associated with various Greek myths and poems. It is said that it was founded by an important Greek figure: Perseus, son of Zeus.

Mycenae is also mentioned in the famous Iliad as a mythical hero, Agamemnon, who reigned over this city and was important during the Trojan War.

Finally, it is said that in an ancient city of Argolis called Epidaurus, Asclepius, a son of the god Apollo, was born. This mythical character was a doctor with such skill that it was said that he was able to bring the dead back to life.

What to Eat in Argolis

Argolis is famous and recognized for its delicious dishes and local products. A large part of its territory is dedicated to the cultivation of oranges and olives, so we recommend enjoying its olive oil and the jams or preserves that are made with oranges.

Among its most popular and requested dishes is gourounopoula, which is roast pork, and highlights the bogana, which is lamb meat cooked in a pot along with vegetables.

Fresh fish meals abound in the coastal taverns and if you're a fan of pasta you can't miss the gogges, eggless pasta shaped like a seashell and served with a sauce made from local cheeses.

An interesting option to try is ice cream which is made from goat's milk. We recommend trying regional liquors such as ouzo, which has a strong sweet taste and a licorice smell.

Activities in the Nature of Argolis

Argolis is a region with a great diversity of landscapes that invite tourists to practice different activities and rest.

On the one hand, there are mountains in which you can go hiking and cycling. Many have their paths marked so that it is impossible to get lost and there are even meeting points where you can take a break from the walk and drink water.

For those who love sunbathing and listening to the waves, Argolis also offers a variety of beaches. There are beaches with fine sand as well as rocky coasts, this will depend on where you are, but if they all have something in common, it is their wonderful blue sea with pleasant temperatures.

Places of Interest in Argolis

Argolis is not only landscapes, but you will also be able to find tourist attractions that will not take long to capture your attention. We recommend some that you cannot miss on your visit to this wonderful region:

  1. The Sanctuary of Asclepius: located in Epidaurus, it was one of the most important sanctuaries of Asclepius, a famous Greek doctor. For a while, it was also a medical school.
  2. Mycenae: it is an archaeological site that contains a lot of history, the cradle of one of the most important civilizations: the Mycenaeans. It has several tourist attractions such as the Lion’s Gates or the Cyclopean Walls.
  3. Palamidi Fortress: It is in Nafplio and is an architectural wonder that is located on a hill. It can be accessed in two ways: by car or by climbing a staircase of about 800 steps.
