Where to Go if You Like to Feel Like in Mamma Movie?

December 05, 2024 4 min read.

If you are a cinema lover, then Mamma Mia might be one of those iconic movies you still have constantly in mind. This 2008 movie was a success at the box office, and the critics gave it nominations for important awards such as the Golden Globes.

The cast that worked on Mamma Mia can be considered a dream team. From the three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep to Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, and Julie Walters, the movie tells the story of a bride-to-be trying to find her real father, told using hit songs by the popular 1970s group ABBA.

The production of this popular movie was filmed on the paradisiac Greek island of Skopelos, using different locations that are making this destination very popular to recreate the most amazing scenes of the movie. It is said that the producers of Mamma Mia visited more than 20 different islands in Greece, and they literally fell in love with the wonderful Skopelos.

If you are interested in knowing more about the locations used to create this movie, check out this article we wrote for you!

The famous Wedding Chapel

The Agios Ioannis chapel served as the location for one of the most iconic scenes of the movie, the big wedding day. This spectacular small church is located on the top of a rock that provides beautiful views of the area, especially of the coasts of Skopelos and Alonissos.

History says that this church was built as a small castle to protect the island from pirates and invasions. There is a beautiful beach next to it, which receives many visitors, especially during the summer.

Discovering the charm of the Agios Ioannis chapel is a must-stop for those Mamma Mia lovers, as it might be the most symbolic location of the movie on the island.

Kastani beach

Most of the scenes in the movies were filmed on the beautiful Kastani beach. Famous worldwide, especially in Hollywood, the beach attracts thousands of tourists every year who want to enjoy the same experience as the Mamma Mia cast had.

This beach is located on the west side of Skopelos, with comfortable parking offering a spacious area to accommodate yourself there. The greenery of the area, where the tall pines stand out, mixed with the crystal clear waters and sandy coast, makes this beach one of the most spectacular settings to enjoy during summer vacation. Of course, the reputation of the place makes it the most famous beach in Skopelos.

At Kastani beach, different scenes were filmed. The most important ones were when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and Sky (Dominic Cooper) sang the romantic ABBA song "Lay All Your Love On Me". As well, Donna (Meryl Streep) performed for the lovebirds the song "I Have a Dream".

Of course, Kastani beach was accommodated with the wooden pier and beach bar exclusively for the movie, which was removed after finishing the film. Therefore, expect some differences between the scenes and real life.

Glysteri beach & Cape Amarandos

The Glysteri beach is close to Skopelos town, and it is where Sophie and her three fathers were enjoying their sailing trip and singing "Our Last Summer." Also, there are some general scenes that were filmed here, especially in the rocks that you can find all over the area. For example, this is also the location where Sophie sets off from Villa Donna on a donkey towards her wedding.

You can reach this beautiful beach by car, or if you are into long walks, enjoy the journey till you reach it. This is a perfect place to sunbathe, swim in their turquoise waters, and enjoy the most beautiful atmosphere in the summer.

On the other hand, the cliffs of Cape Amarandos also served as locations for different parts of the film. For example, the pine-covered rocks were the space where the "Honey Honey" song was sung by Sophie, as she was reading extracts of her mom’s diary. This important scene made Sophie start thinking about her having three different fathers.
