General Information of Siena
Siena is one of the most prominent cities in Italian Tuscany, this region in central Italy was formerly a Grand Duchy and is known for its art pieces and beautiful landscapes, its architectural value, and its famous cuisine.
The city of Siena, located to the east of a group of metal-bearing hills and to the south of Florence, is geographically characterized by a landscape full of mountains, vineyard hills, valleys, forests, and crop fields.
This destination, chosen by thousands of tourists, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995, due to its medieval charm, a product of its picturesque cobbled streets and its towers, palaces, and medieval fountains, which generates the feeling of being inside of a fairy tale. Also, Siena is famous for its artisan products and for its spectacular gastronomic offer.
Siena: the City Frozen in Time
Much of Siena's appeal lies in its cultural and natural wealth. Historical buildings stand in the middle of hills and are invaded by the green of nature that covers the bricks.
A large part of these constructions come from the 13th century, a time of splendor in the development of this city thanks to the economic expansion that had placed it as a rival to Florence. The boom culminated when at the end of the 14th century, under the control of the Medici family, the city had to bow to its Florentine neighbors.
How Is the Culture in Siena
Good Eating and Good Drinking
Siena is your place if you love to know a culture through its flavors. Its secret: confidence in a quality raw material made in its own land.
The first must-see in this area of vineyards is the wine, whether you choose to participate in a tasting or order a Chianti, an aromatic red wine typical of the area, to accompany a beautiful evening, a glass of this bottled poetry is a must.
As for its delicious dishes, something highly recommended if you go to a restaurant is to start by ordering an antipasti, an appetizer prior to the main course that usually consists of slices of Tuscan bread with olive oil, garlic and some addition such as cauliflower or pecorino cheese. Then, order some of its most emblematic dishes, such as pici, a type of pasta typical of the place. And if sweets are your thing, be sure to try the panforte di Siena, an exquisite dessert with fruits and nuts.
Wander Aimlessly through Siena
If you are thinking of traveling to Siena, be prepared to totally disconnect from the whirlwind of today.
Its twisted streets, its restaurants full of herbal aromas, its water fountains and the green of the plants that intermingle with the architectural details, create an atmosphere of peace in which you very easily lose track of time. Strolling aimlessly and letting you be surprised by the magic of the place, is a great plan in Siena.
The Palo di Siena: an Annual Festival
The Palo di Siena is an event that takes place on July 2 and August 16. A horse race takes place there, in which 10 of Siena's 17 neighborhoods compete, around Piazza del Campo.
Piazza del Campo is the main square of Siena and is located in the historic center. This medieval square has a unique fan shape that makes it stand out and it is the venue where the main festivities take place, such as this competition.
The day before the race, the Palio March is held, which is a march in which knights representing different historical institutions parade. It is a parade in the pure color that you can enjoy if you go on these dates.
Go Shopping in Siena
Undoubtedly, going shopping in Siena is a great proposal, as this beautiful city stands out for its variety of businesses, where you can find everything from artisan pottery shops or other products made by local artisans to modern showcases with Italian fashion brands.
If you want to bring a present, or give it to yourself, all you have to do is meet the recipient of the gift, because Siena has an original offer for all tastes and budgets.
The Idiosyncrasy of Siena
Siena is a city as rich in architecture, history, and art as it is in natural resources. For this reason, in this heritage, the best of two worlds coexist: on the one hand, the peace typical of the rhythm of traditions, and, on the other, the growing cultural commitment that is reflected in the events, concerts, sports activities and the theatrical offer that the city offers.
If you are interested in learning about the art, architecture, history, and culture of Siena, the city is full of places of interest, such as one of the oldest universities in the world, a gothic cathedral, the civic museum, the towers and palaces, the fountains and pieces of sculpture, or, simply, its streets and the life that takes place in them, which accounts for the customs and traditions of the territory.
In case you are a lover of outdoor activities, Siena offers tours of the different wine routes and beautiful paths to doing by bicycle.
Whatever you choose, exquisite food will never be lacking in the plan, because if something distinguishes Siena, it is that there, eating is a very important matter. If a local recommends a dish to you, say “Yes!” Possibly you end up knowing their cultural identity by mouthfuls.
