12-Day Sicily Tour: From Catania to the Aeolian Islands

Upon your arrival in Catania, one of our vehicles will be waiting for you at the airport to welcome you and comfortably and quickly transfer you to your hotel. After you check-in, the rest of the day will be free for you to relax and begin enjoying Catania at your own pace. 

Catania is a beautiful city located on the east coast of Sicily. It has a rich history dating back to ancient times. The city has witnessed the influence of different civilizations, including Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Normans, which is why the historic center of Catania is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Greca Tip: Head to Piazza Umberto and try the traditional and highly refreshing drink “completo” (orzata, fresh lemon juice, anise, and soda water) at one of the square's kiosks.

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, we will depart for Syracuse, one of the most fascinating cities in Sicily, where history, culture, and the legacy of ancient civilizations come together in a unique setting.

We will begin our visit at the Neapolis Archaeological Park, where we will discover some of the most important treasures of the classical era. We will admire the majestic Greek Theatre, one of the largest and best-preserved in the ancient world, and continue with the Roman Amphitheatre, a testament to the grandeur and power of Rome. We will walk through the evocative Latomies of Paradise, ancient stone quarries filled with history, and conclude the visit with the impressive Ear of Dionysius, a cave with extraordinary acoustics linked to ancient legends.

We will continue to the island of Ortigia, the historic heart of Syracuse, where we will stroll through its charming streets and squares. The visit will begin at the elegant Piazza Duomo, where we will admire the Cathedral of Syracuse, a jewel of Sicilian Baroque built on the remains of an ancient Greek temple. The walk will continue through the picturesque streets of the old town until reaching the harbor, from where we will admire the beauty of Arethusa’s Fountain, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

In the afternoon, we will transfer to Noto, considered one of the greatest jewels of Sicilian Baroque. During our walk through its elegant historic center, we will discover its magnificent palaces, churches, and 18th-century buildings, which have earned the city recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will have free time to enjoy the unique atmosphere of this charming town.

At the end of the visit, we will continue to Ragusa. Upon arrival at the hotel, we will enjoy the included dinner before resting. Overnight accommodation in Ragusa.

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, we will depart for Modica, a magnificent Baroque town included within the Val di Noto, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This charming town will captivate us with its elegant churches, historic palaces, picturesque narrow streets climbing up the hillside, and breathtaking panoramic views, creating a unique atmosphere where Sicilian history and traditions remain alive.

During our visit, we will stop at the renowned Sabadì chocolate shop, where we will have the opportunity to taste its famous artisan chocolate, internationally awarded and certified with the I.G.P. and Slow Food distinctions. This authentic local specialty is crafted according to ancient traditions.

We will continue the day with lunch at a traditional restaurant, where we can enjoy the authentic flavors of Sicilian cuisine.

In the afternoon, we will head to Piazza Armerina to visit the famous Villa Romana del Casale, one of the most important archaeological treasures in Sicily. Here, we will admire its extraordinary mosaics, considered among the most impressive artistic expressions of the Roman era and an exceptional testimony to daily life, culture, and the splendor of antiquity.

At the end of the visit, we will continue to Agrigento. Upon arrival at the hotel, we will enjoy the included dinner before resting.

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, we will continue our journey to the impressive Valley of the Temples, an extraordinary archaeological site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, we will discover the remains of ancient Akragas and admire some of the finest examples of Greek architecture, including the majestic Temple of Juno, the Temple of Concordia, and the Temple of Hercules, true masterpieces of antiquity.

The day will continue towards the charming city of Marsala, famous for Garibaldi’s landing and for its renowned namesake wine. During our walk through the historic center, we will admire its elegant noble palaces and Baroque monuments, which reflect the city’s richness and splendor throughout the centuries.

We will then enjoy an exclusive visit to the Florio Wineries, one of Sicily’s most emblematic wine producers. The tour will begin in front of the majestic giant vats from the 19th century, still used for the aging of Marsala wine. We will explore the three fascinating historic cellars and enjoy a light lunch accompanied by a selection of wines produced by the winery.

In the afternoon, we will continue along the picturesque Salt Road, where we will admire the unique landscapes of the Stagnone Islands and the ancient salt pans, considered among the oldest in the world and still active today as an important salt extraction area.

At the end of the visit, we will continue to Palermo. Upon arrival at the hotel, we will have free time to relax. Dinner at leisure and overnight accommodation in Palermo.

After enjoying a delicious breakfast at the hotel, we will begin the day with a visit to Monreale, renowned for its imposing Arab-Norman Cathedral. Inside, we’ll be amazed by the dazzling Byzantine mosaics that depict biblical scenes with a golden brilliance like no other. We will also explore the Cloister, with its finely carved columns evoking the delicacy of medieval art.

We will then head to Palermo, the Sicilian capital nestled at the foot of Mount Pellegrino. This city is a true melting pot of cultures, reflected in its unique architecture that blends Arab, Norman, Gothic, and Baroque influences.

Our visit begins at the Cathedral of Palermo, an architectural gem that encapsulates centuries of history. We will continue to the Church of La Martorana, famous for its exquisite mosaics, and to the Palatine Chapel, a masterpiece of Norman art, with a carved wooden ceiling and radiant golden mosaics.

At midday, we’ll enjoy a typical Sicilian lunch at a local restaurant, perfect for savoring the aromas of island tradition.

In the afternoon, we will admire the elegant Teatro Massimo, one of the largest opera houses in Europe, and the Fountain of Piazza Pretoria, known as the “Fountain of Shame” for its nude statues and Renaissance design.

The day concludes with free time for dinner and return to your accommodation.

Greca Tip: To experience Palermo like a local, try a panelle or an arancina at one of the historic markets such as Ballarò or Vucciria—a truly authentic bite in the heart of the city!

After a rich breakfast, you will leave for Cefalu, a small and beautiful fishing village, famous for its Norman cathedral, its medieval old town, its archaeological museum, and its gastronomy loaded with seafood.

You will stroll through the charming streets of the center and you will have the possibility of visiting the famous Mandralisca Museum that exhibits one of the most beautiful and mysterious portraits of Antonello Da Messina, the portrait of the "Unknown Man", whose enigmatic smile seems to have inspired the Mona Lisa of Leonardo da Vinci.

You will have a stop to have lunch in a famous restaurant.

Then you will continue to Catania, a city that was not lucky in terms of the countless invasions in the course of history, but that was able to find a balance in the beauty of its historical center, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Once in Catania, you will walk through the historical center passing through the old fish market in Plaza Alonso de Benedetto until reaching the Plaza del Duomo with the Cathedral of Santa Agata, rebuilt after the earthquake in 1693, and then the fountain with a stone elephant holding an obelisk on his back (symbol of the city).

We will make a stop at a very cozy bar where you will taste the typical sweet granita with brioche.

After this amazing tour, we will have accommodation in Catania.

Greca Tip: If you like taking panoramic photos, go up to the dome of the Cathedral of Santa Ágata.

After a delicious breakfast, you will make a quick visit to the historic fish market. Then you will go to visit Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You will arrive at the Sapienza Refuge at 1,800 meters of altitude where we will visit the extinguished craters or, "Crateri Silvestri". The beauty of this place is based on the fact that for centuries the volcano has created a place where nature, culture, and history have come together to give rise to a unique place in the world.

Then you will visit a beekeeping company, exactly a honey extraction laboratory, you will taste artisan honey and typical products of the area.

At the end you will continue to Taormina, where you will enjoy a lunch in a restaurant in the old town. Later you will be able to discover the romantic streets of the city or to visit the famous Greco-Roman Theater, a typical postcard image of Taormina, we will marvel at its architecture and the panoramic view with Etna in the background.

The theater was built in Hellenistic times and was almost entirely rebuilt in the times of Roman rule when the venue was used for gladiatorial fighting. Currently, the Taormina Film Festival is held here.

The day will end with panoramic views of the splendid Cyclops Riviera.

After the tour has finished, you will return to your hotel in Catania.

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, we will begin a day dedicated to the legendary filming locations of The Godfather. We will travel through the hills above the Sicilian coast until reaching Savoca, a village that seems frozen in time and preserves the authentic essence of traditional Sicily.

We will stroll through its narrow streets, the very same paths walked by Michael Corleone, portrayed by Al Pacino, and visit the Church of Santa Lucia, the setting of the iconic wedding scene from the film. We will continue with a stop at the legendary Bar Vitelli, an essential visit to take a memorable souvenir photo and relive the atmosphere of one of the most famous scenes in cinema.

In the afternoon, we will continue to Forza d’Agrò, a true medieval gem that also served as a filming location for Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece. Its cobblestone streets, stone houses, and atmosphere of bygone times will transport us to a Sicily full of history and charm.

At the end of the visit, we will return to Taormina. Dinner at leisure and overnight accommodation at the hotel.

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, we will continue our journey to the beautiful Aeolian Islands. During this part of the itinerary, there will be no guide or tour escort accompanying the group. We will take a private transfer to the port of Milazzo and board a hydrofoil bound for Lipari, the largest and most vibrant island of the Aeolian archipelago.

Upon arrival, we will check in at the hotel and enjoy free time for lunch and to begin exploring the charm of this volcanic island at our own pace. Lipari is renowned for its Mediterranean landscapes, picturesque streets, and crystal-clear waters.

In the afternoon, we will transfer to Tenuta di Castellaro, a prestigious winery located on the island, where we will enjoy an experience that combines wine, nature, and breathtaking scenery. During the visit, we will tour the winery facilities and stroll through the vineyards, surrounded by spectacular panoramic views of the sea and the neighboring islands.

As sunset approaches, we will take part in an exclusive wine tasting, one of the highlights of the day. While the sun sets over the horizon, we will savor a selection of local wines in a unique setting that perfectly captures the beauty of the Aeolian Islands.

At the end of the experience, we will return to the hotel. Dinner at leisure and overnight accommodation in Lipari.

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, we will dedicate the day to discovering two of the most fascinating islands in the Aeolian archipelago. We will sail through the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea to admire some of Lipari’s most spectacular landscapes, including the white Pumice Cave, impressive volcanic cliffs, crystal-clear bays, and the famous Faraglioni sea stacks, natural symbols of the island.

We will then continue sailing to Salina, considered the greenest and most elegant island of the archipelago. Throughout the journey, we will admire charming coastal villages, spectacular seascapes, and scenery shaped by centuries of volcanic activity and Mediterranean traditions.

Our first stop will be Santa Marina Salina, the island’s main town, where we will have time to stroll through its streets and enjoy its relaxed atmosphere. We will continue along Salina’s eastern coast, admiring the Malvasia vineyards, Capo Faro lighthouse, and the town of Malfa. We will stop at the beautiful Bay of Pollara, made famous as the filming location of Il Postino (The Postman), one of the most iconic settings in the Aeolian Islands.

Later, we will reach Lingua, a picturesque fishing village where we will have free time for lunch at one of the local restaurants and to enjoy its charming coves by the sea. We will also have the opportunity to visit the salt lake that gave the island of Salina its name.

On the return journey to Lipari, we will continue discovering some of the island’s most beautiful sea caves and make one final stop for a swim at Vinci Beach, located opposite the impressive Faraglioni sea stacks.

At the end of the excursion, we will return to Lipari. Upon arrival at the hotel, we will enjoy the included dinner before resting.

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, we will set sail for Panarea, the smallest and most exclusive island of the Aeolian archipelago. Upon arrival, we will visit the beautiful Bay of Calajunco, one of the island’s most spectacular natural settings, overlooked by the prehistoric village of Capo Milazzese. We will also stop at the nearby Cala Zimmari, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and picturesque scenery.

The excursion will continue with a panoramic navigation among the surrounding islets, including a view of the famous Grotta degli Innamorati (Lovers’ Cave), before reaching the island’s port. Once there, we will have free time for lunch, a stroll through Panarea’s elegant whitewashed streets, and the opportunity to visit its prehistoric archaeological site.

In the afternoon, we will continue towards Stromboli, an island with a truly primordial character. Here, we will witness one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles: the glowing eruptions of the Stromboli volcano. During a sunset cruise beneath the famous Sciara del Fuoco, we will admire the volcanic activity from the sea, creating an unforgettable and unique experience.

Once on the island, we will have free time for dinner and to explore its charming streets, browse local shops, admire the beautiful gardens, or enjoy a swim in its cobalt-blue waters.

Late in the evening, we will return to Lipari for our overnight stay.

Greca Tip: Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and has been erupting almost continuously for thousands of years. Watching its fiery eruptions illuminate the night sky is one of the most unforgettable experiences in the Aeolian Islands.

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, you will have free time to enjoy your final moments in Lipari. Take the opportunity to stroll through its charming streets, discover its picturesque corners, or simply relax while admiring the landscapes that make the Aeolian Islands such a special destination.

At the scheduled time, you will be transferred to the port to board the hydrofoil to Milazzo. During the crossing, you will bid farewell to the spectacular volcanic landscapes and the unmistakable Mediterranean charm that characterize this extraordinary archipelago.

Upon arrival in Milazzo, you will continue with a private transfer to Catania Airport to catch your flight or continue to your next destination.

This marks the end of our journey through Sicily and the Aeolian Islands, an unforgettable experience that has allowed us to discover ancient civilizations, historic cities, impressive archaeological treasures, unique volcanic landscapes, and some of the most authentic traditions of the Mediterranean.
