Discover the History of the Roman Baths

We will visit the city's main attraction, which owes its name to it: the Roman Baths of Bath.

The origin of this place dates back to the time of the Celts, who built a sanctuary dedicated to one of their goddesses, Sulis.

Subsequently, it was the Romans who built their own temple, between the years 60 and 70, and over the next two centuries, the baths took shape.

After the original baths were destroyed in the 6th century, new baths were built in the following centuries, until a complex of buildings was constructed in the 18th century.

Within this complex, you will find the famous neoclassical tea room known as the Pump Room, where visitors can drink the spring waters.

During our visit to the Roman Baths, we will see the heart of these baths, which is the corner known as the Sacred Spring.

In this corner, we will witness the flow of hot water, almost 1.2 million liters every day at a temperature of 46 degrees. And this has been happening for thousands of years, so in ancient times, it was believed to be the work of the gods.

Also, during the visit to the baths, we will pass through some rooms where there is a museum with mosaics and other archaeological remains from the original Roman temple, located beneath the cemetery of the aforementioned Gothic abbey.

But undoubtedly, the most prominent and spectacular corner we will visit is the Great Bath. It is a rectangular pool, 1.6 meters deep, filled with hot water flowing from the spring.

The pool is surrounded by a colonnaded gallery. The best place to appreciate this pool is the terrace surrounding the Great Bath, where various statues with Roman figures are located, creating a grand architectural ensemble with the Gothic Bath Abbey in the background.

Greca Tip: The goddess Sulis Minerva was a hybrid of Roman and Celtic religions. Considered the goddess of justice, people whose belongings were stolen would come to the Roman baths to seek her help in recovering their lost items.
