Excursion Itinerary: Pella And Vergina From Thessaloniki

TOUR TO PELLA AND VERGINA
TOUR TO PELLA AND VERGINA

In the morning, at around 08:00 hrs, you will set out on a tour of Pella, known as the historic capital of ancient Macedonia and the birthplace of Alexander the Great. Pella was formerly a strategic port connected by a navigable inlet to the Thermaic Gulf, but the port and the gulf have filled with sediment, and the site has become landlocked. There you will visit the modern museum, as well as the archaeological site that has some of the most impressive mosaics. At the archaeological site you will stand in the old city market, gaze at the mosaic of the "Abduction of Helen" and the "Amazonomachy" (the battle of Amazons). In the museum, there is a collection of objects and artefacts depicting people's daily life; characteristic signs of the lifestyle in ancient times.

Then you will continue to Vergina, where you will visit the Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai, located on the outskirts of the village. The characteristic Golden Larnax (funerary casket), an urn with the remains of Philip II of Macedonia is marked with a 16-ray sun, the symbol of Macedonia. The Sun of Vergina (or Star of Vergina), which is a characteristic symbol of the Argead Dynasty (of King Philip II and Alexander the Great) was found when the excavations brought to light his father’s Royal Tomb. Four of the sunrays represent the four classic elements and the other twelve sunrays represent the 12 Olympic gods. You will admire the golden oak crown that Philip II wore in his funeral pyre, military armors, several funeral items, the other graves that were unearthed and a small sanctuary, the Heroon.
After this grand cultural visit, at around 16:30 hrs, you will return to Thessaloniki.

Greca Tip: From the on-site museum shop you can find a selection of original copies of Greek antiquities, archaeological publications and souvenirs.
