Excursion Itinerary: Hot Springs Of Pozar And Edessa From Thessaloniki

TOUR TO EDESSA AND THE HOT SPRING OF POZAR
TOUR TO EDESSA AND THE HOT SPRING OF POZAR

At around 08:00 in the morning you will start your trip to Pozar.

One explanation regarding the meaning of the name "Pozar" is "after the charcoal", while another would be "under the fire".  In the past the village was located in a different place that was burned or caught fire, so the villagers gave the name "Pozar" to their new settlement.

You will arrive at the lovely hot springs of Pozar, the spa into nature. The healing water permeates the soil and, after reaching a certain depth, it is heated up and returns to the surface enriched with minerals and other valuable elements.

You will admire the beautiful gorge located in the majestic mountain where the "Toplitsa" river (in Slavic language is defined as "the hot river") flows through, forming small waterfalls and shallow shores. Today it is mainly known as the river of Saint Nicolas.

You will have free time to enjoy a nice cup of coffee while benefiting from the healing qualities of water by relaxing in the natural pools of the hot springs. Don't forget to bring a swimsuit and a towel!

Here you will also have the opportunity to taste the traditional delicacies of local producers (honey, spoon sweets, etc.) from the local market. Then you will continue your trip to Edessa.

The name Edessa means "tower into the water" due to the intense presence of this natural element in the city since ancient times. You will have free time to admire the cascading waterfalls and immerse yourself in the enchanting landscape; the waterfalls meet the edge of the rock, also known as the "eyebrow" of the city, so it is here where, according to the famous Greek author, Menelaos Lountemis, "God steps on to climb up to heaven." The water that constantly supplies the cataracts falls from the springs of the Kaimaktsalan mountain.

Here you can join your local guide on a walking tour of the old district and visit the Water Museum or Sesame Mills for an unforgettable experience or enjoy a nice meal in one of the traditional restaurants.

At the end of your visit, at about 4:30 p.m, and after lunch, you will return to Thessaloniki.

Greca Tip: Apart from the curative qualities of the water, make sure you try xinomavro, the famous red wine with the bright red colour.
