Excursion Itinerary: Pamukkale From Istanbul

Early in the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel in Istanbul to transfer you to the airport and travel to Pamukkale.

Pamukkale means "Cotton Castle" in Turkish and refers to the surface of the shimmering snow-white limestone surface formed by the calcite-rich springs of the area.  It is a place where nature assumed the role of the artist and created such majestic beauty! It is one of those unique places that feature on the UNESCO World Heritage list and also appears on every traveler's list, with almost two million people visiting it every year. Comprised of numerous calcium ponds, filled with warm mineral-laden water, it is unlike anything you have ever seen before and no trip to Turkey would be complete without taking a dip in its warm pools. However, the natural beauty created over thousands of years is so fragile that only certain areas are open for paddling or dipping. In the Pamukkale region there is the ancient site of Hierapolis, a Hellenistic and roman town, which served as a thermal spa health center due to its proximity to the hot springs. The remains of this ancient city consist of baths, temple ruins, a colonnaded street, a monumental arch, a nymphaeum, a necropolis and an open-air theatre, decorated with an frieze depicting a ritual procession and a sacrifice to the Ephesian Artemis.

You can freely explore the site, which is largely intact and very well preserved, while the boundaries of the city will give you an idea of its significance and of what the city would have been like in its days of glory. You will also visit the museum, a  large building housed in the former Roman baths and gymnasium and contains a number of fascinating artifacts from the site, such as jewelry, oil lamps, statuary and stamp seals. Near the Temple of Apollo you will have free time to swim in the antique pool, a unique experience as it is littered with fallen marble columns.

You will stop for lunch at a local restaurant and will enjoy the local gastronomy.  Early in the evening, you will be transferred to the airport to board your flight back to Istanbul. Arrival and transfer to your accommodation.

Tip Greca: Ask about programs that allow a stay of several days to take advantage of the hot springs in the hotels.
