At the scheduled time, we will meet our guide at the designated meeting point to begin a fascinating journey to the north of Portugal, where two historical gems await us: Braga and Guimarães. Aboard a comfortable minibus, we will travel through lush landscapes of mountains, valleys, and rivers, while our guide shares stories and curiosities about Portuguese cultural heritage.
Our first stop will be Braga, one of the oldest cities in the country and a major religious center. We will visit the majestic Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its baroque stairway and lush gardens. After some free time to enjoy the surroundings, we will continue to Braga Cathedral, the oldest in Portugal, showcasing a blend of Romanesque, Manueline, and Baroque styles.
Next, we will take a guided tour of Braga’s historic center, including landmarks such as the Santa Bárbara Garden, followed by free time to enjoy lunch or explore the city at your own pace.
In the afternoon, we will head to Guimarães, known as the birthplace of Portugal. We’ll begin with a visit to the imposing Guimarães Castle, a 10th-century national symbol. We’ll then stroll through its charming historic center, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, passing by the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, the Church of São Miguel, Santiago Square, and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, among other iconic spots.
After some free time to continue discovering this beautifully preserved medieval city, we’ll return to Porto, with an estimated arrival at 5:00 p.m.
Greca Tip: While in Braga, try a “frigideira,” a local meat-filled pastry that’s a beloved favorite among locals. Perfect to recharge your energy!
