We will begin our tour of Sarajevo’s Old Town by exploring the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its beautiful capital.
During this visit, we’ll discover why Sarajevo is called the “European Jerusalem,” learn many interesting facts about the city, and see the most important monuments of Sarajevo’s Old Town.
We’ll visit the Old Orthodox Church, which is part of the pilgrimage route to Sarajevo. Then we’ll head to Sarajevo’s most recognizable landmark: Sebilj, a wooden fountain located in Baščaršija Square. We’ll find the oldest street in Sarajevo, filled with amazing works of art. Our next stop will be Sarajevo City Hall, the most beautiful building from the Austro-Hungarian era. Since 1949, the building has served as the National Library.
We’ll visit the largest and most beautiful mosque in Sarajevo, known as the Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque. Nearby, we’ll see the unique Clock Tower, famous for displaying a completely unusual time system for the 20th century.
We’ll learn about the history of the Jewish community that has been present in Sarajevo for nearly five centuries and visit the oldest Jewish synagogue in the city.
Together with our local guide, we’ll continue toward the modern part of Sarajevo, where we’ll see a completely different architectural style typical of the Habsburg monarchy. We’ll visit the cathedral and the statue of Pope John Paul II, who visited Bosnia twice. We’ll also talk about the “Sarajevo Roses.”
The tour ends at the famous Latin Bridge, the site of the assassination of Franz Ferdinand.
Greca Tip: Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water. Sarajevo’s streets are full of stories, and you'll want to enjoy every step!
