In the morning, Rhodes reveals its most verdant soul, inviting you to discover why it is known as the “Emerald of the Mediterranean.” Today’s excursion takes you into the island’s lush heart, where nature and legend intertwine.
Your journey begins at Butterfly Valley, a rare natural sanctuary where shaded wooden paths follow the gentle flow of the Pelekanos River. For around two hours, you will walk beneath waterfalls and leafy canopies while observing thousands of Panaxia quadripunctaria butterflies resting on tree trunks. Along the way, you may also spot the endemic Potamon rhodium freshwater crab, a small yet ancient inhabitant of the island’s ecosystem, unchanged for millennia.
By midday, you will head to the island’s east coast to explore Seven Springs, a tranquil oasis long valued for its fresh water. Here, you will have time to enjoy a leisurely lunch at a café by the springs, continue a light hike through the greenery, or—if you feel adventurous—walk through a narrow underground tunnel leading to a hidden lake, dam, and cascading waterfall, a surprising feat of early 20th-century engineering.
Tip Greca: Wear comfortable shoes and bring a light jacket; the shaded valleys stay pleasantly cool even on warm days.
