What Meteora Is Known For

Meteora is known for its incredible landscape, which stands out for bringing together the most incredible of nature with the most unexpected of architecture. This is so because in this region there used to be a saltwater lagoon that 60 million years ago exposed this mined territory of rock formations, which over time eroded more and more, until they looked like pillars of heaven. This wonder, in turn, attracted monks who believed that they would be closer to God in this way and built their temples on the peaks.

Many years later, during the Ottoman invasion, these temples became havens for Hellenic culture, it was there that they became the center of artistic and academic life.

Unfortunately, of several of these temples today only ruins remain because they were bombed in the Second World War, as they served as shelters. However, you can still enter several of those that are still standing today.
