The best views of Rome: How to see the city from above? II

May 19, 20246 min read.

General Information About Rome

Rome, the capital of Italy, is a city that oozes history, art, and culture from every corner. Founded according to legend in 753 BC by Romulus and Remus, it is one of the oldest cities in the world that is still inhabited.

Known as the "Eternal City," Rome was once the epicenter of the vast Roman Empire, which dominated much of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East for centuries.

The Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Pantheon are just a few of the iconic monuments that attest to the grandeur of Rome's past.

The Vatican, a separate enclave within the city, houses the impressive St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums, home to the famous Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo.

In addition to its vast historical legacy, Rome is a vibrant and modern city, full of life and energy. Its streets are lined with cozy trattorias, where you can enjoy delicious Italian cuisine and savor an authentic espresso.

It is also a shopper's paradise, with elegant boutiques and street markets where you can find everything from high fashion to unique antiques.

The Sights in Rome

Tabularium

The Tabularium is the building that supports the structure of the Palazzo Senatorio, the current seat of the Municipality of Rome. It is very ancient, dating back to Roman times, and can be visited together with the Capitoline Museums.

Terrace of the Vittoriano

Since 2007, several panoramic elevators have been taking you up to the upper terrace of the Vittoriano. From here there are magnificent views of the Roman Forum, the Imperial Forum, the Colosseum, the Via del Corso, etc. Admission required.

Colina del Gianicolo

The wide terrace of the monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi is a magnificent viewpoint, with signs to help you orient yourself in the forest of towers and domes of the city.

Another good vantage point is the lighthouse, 400 meters from the statue, to the left of where the horse is looking.

Quirinal

The panoramic view of the Vatican from this quiet terrace is especially nice at sunset, with the sun setting over St. Peter's.

Pincio Hill

The Roman aristocracy of the 19th century liked to drive their carriages late in the day to this large terrace overlooking Piazza del Popolo. From the public park built on this hill at the beginning of that century, they watched the sunset.

Quattro Fontane

The crossroads of Quattro Fontane, so called because of the four fountains that decorate its corners, has a very curious peculiarity.

It is the only point in the city, and perhaps in the world, from which three obelisks can be seen: the one in Piazza di Spagna, the one in Santa Maria Maggiore, and the one in the Quirinal.

The Aventine

The unexpected view of St. Peter's from this point is already famous. On the entrance gate to the estate of the Priory of Malta, there is a lock, through which you can see the dome of St. Peter's, at the end of a hedged corridor.

It is located in Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta, number 3, to the left of the church of San Alejo.
