Ballon flight in Cappadocia: A unique and authentic experience

April 25, 20245 min read.

Cappadocia is charming: the landscape, the colors of the rocks, the vivid formations made by the forces of nature for thousands of years. Undoubtedly, there are few areas on planet Earth that come close to a supernatural experience (with a rugged landscape similar to the Moon or Mars) and Cappadocia is surely one of them.

There is a lot to do in Cappadocia: hiking, visiting underground cities and caves, enjoying the hospitality of a cave hotel and good food, among many other things. But a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia is a must. The reason why? The rock formations, valleys and unusual landscape in this region are best enjoyed with an aerial view. No doubt it!

Many places in Cappadocia can be explored, taking short walks or glimpsing the picturesque landscape by car. But the hot air balloon ride is a memorable ride for anyone.

The beginning of the adventure

The first experience in a hot air balloon is truly amazing. And while a hot air balloon ride is a “soft” event for an adventure addict like any of you, you will certainly be looking forward to seeing the wonderful rock formations and valleys from the top.

Generally, the balloon is expected to be ready as soon as you arrive at the location. And that the task is simple: get there, get on the balloon and get off it. But, in most cases, it is not. In fact, usually, you will find the balloon lying on the ground, ready to be filled it with gas. If you come across this, don't despair. Don't let impatience shake you. It takes some time to fill the gas balloon, it doesn't happen in the blink of an eye, but it is definitely worth it!

While the preparations are being done, the captain will give you some instructions: how to hold the basket, even obvious things like not bowing, the correct landing position, etc.

When the gas begins to fill the balloon, it will begin to rise like a giant puppet that raises its head. Therefore, the basket is held on the ground with thick ropes, and awaits, ready for people to get on board.

The feeling that you are practically alone in this vast region disappears the moment you fly in the sky and glimpse dozens of balloons around you. If you visit Cappadocia in low season, you will see about 40 or 50 balloons around. But if you do it in high season, the number of balloons increases to double.

Even though the sky fills up with people, there is a certain harmony to be enjoyed: All those multi-colored balloons soar and travel the sky without making each other uncomfortable.

The balloon trip, of course, depends a lot on the weather conditions of that day. Usually a little wind can give them the push to lift them high enough. But a few gusts may make the adventure uncomfortable. The captain will guide and advise you in case the wind is a little intense.

Landing? Easy!

Almost perfect weather conditions ensure a very smooth landing. And when you hit the ground, again, some companies organize a picnic for you. Yes, the captain in addition to landing in the best way, does it quite close to the picnic table. Fresh juice, fruit and light snacks are available to the entire crew!

The hot air balloon company can also take you back to your hotel. A return not only filled with joy, but also with charming photos and even more beautiful memories.

Tips and additional information

-Children under 7 or 8 are not allowed in a hot air balloon, so families should check with their operator for the exact age. Even if allowed, make sure your child holds the basket firmly. Also, adults should remain calm during the flight. This one-hour trip gives you more than enough time to take pictures of the incredible scenery.

-There is nothing to fear, most of the walks, even with some wind, are soft and languid. They give you a brief overview of the landing position at first. But be aware that the journey can be uncomfortable if weather conditions change. This is a safe experience, but perhaps not for people who truly fear heights.

-A one hour flight is a good experience. So if you need to save money, feel free to take the hour-long flight instead of a longer flight.

-The Turkish authorities decide every day if the weather conditions are suitable for a balloon flight. There are many days when flights are all canceled together. There is nothing you can do about it. This is really for your safety. Cancellations are most common during the fall and winter months.

-This is not a cheap experience. But it is definitely a once-in-a- lifetime experience. Geography and unique formations are best enjoyed from an aerial perspective.
