11-day tour of Basque Country, Andorra, and Barcelona from Madrid

Arrival in the vibrant capital of Spain: Madrid. Upon your arrival at the airport, you will be warmly welcomed and comfortably transferred to your hotel, where you can settle in and begin enjoying the Madrid atmosphere.

In the afternoon, we will take you on a panoramic tour that will allow you to discover the city’s most iconic landmarks. We will admire the majesty of the Royal Palace, one of the largest official residences in Europe; see the emblematic Cibeles Fountain, a traditional site for celebrations and a symbol of the city; and drive along the elegant Paseo del Prado, home to some of the world’s most prestigious museums, including the Prado Museum, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen-Bornemisza.

We will end our route at the charming Plaza Mayor, a 17th-century architectural gem—perfect for relaxing at a terrace café while enjoying the local atmosphere as evening falls.

After enjoying a delicious breakfast at the hotel, you will have a free day to continue exploring the Spanish capital at your own pace. You may choose to stroll along its elegant boulevards, visit one of its world-renowned museums, go shopping along Gran Vía, or simply relax in El Retiro Park or at a traditional Madrid café.

Alternatively, we offer an optional excursion to the magnificent city of Toledo, former capital of Spain and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perched on a hill and encircled by the Tagus River, Toledo is a true journey back in time. You’ll admire its stunning cathedral, wander through its medieval alleys, and discover the rich multicultural legacy that reflects the historic coexistence of Christians, Jews, and Muslims. The city is also closely tied to the life and work of the renowned painter El Greco.

Greca Tip: If you choose to stay in Madrid, we recommend visiting the San Miguel Market, trying a traditional Spanish omelette, or enjoying a glass of vermouth in one of the taverns in the La Latina district—perfect for soaking in the city’s authentic local charm.

After enjoying a delightful breakfast, we will begin our journey toward the historic lands of Castile, traveling through majestic mountain landscapes that invite peaceful contemplation. Our first stop will be Segovia, a true gem of Spanish heritage. We will circle the city until we reach the Mirador de la Pradera de San Marcos, offering an unparalleled view of the impressive Alcázar of Segovia, whose towers famously inspired Walt Disney’s castle for Sleeping Beauty, as well as its ancient city walls.

We will then head to the heart of Segovia, where we’ll pause next to the monumental Roman aqueduct, constructed in the 1st century and in continuous use until 1973. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will have free time to stroll through the charming old town at your own pace, explore the Plaza Mayor, visit the Gothic cathedral, or return to the Alcázar to admire its remarkable architecture from within.

Our route continues along picturesque country roads, allowing us to discover the rural beauty of the region, as we arrive in Pedraza, a wonderfully preserved medieval village, considered one of the most beautiful in Spain. Enclosed by sturdy walls, its cobbled streets and 13th-century fortress create an authentic atmosphere that invites you to lose yourself in its quiet charm. You will have time to explore its timeless corners as you wish.

In the afternoon, we will head north toward the Basque Country, arriving in the vibrant city of Bilbao. Upon arrival, you will have free time to wander through its lively old town, filled with traditional taverns and stylish bars where you can taste the famous Basque pintxos—a true expression of local cuisine in miniature form.

Greca Tip: For an authentic experience in Bilbao, pair your favorite pintxos with a glass of txakolí, the region’s crisp white wine. It’s the perfect combination to immerse yourself in Basque life like a true local.

After enjoying breakfast, you will begin the day with a guided tour of Bilbao, a city that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity. We will visit the iconic Guggenheim Museum (external view), renowned for its bold architecture, and explore the lively old town, where narrow medieval streets lead to charming squares and the impressive Cathedral of Santiago. After the tour, you will have free time to stroll and enjoy lunch at your leisure. If you are looking for local flavors, we recommend the La Ribera Market, a riverside culinary space inside a striking building shaped like a ship.

In the afternoon, we will travel to Guernica, a symbol of peace and memory, tragically bombed during the Spanish Civil War and immortalized in Picasso’s powerful painting. Here, you will have the opportunity to see the Tree of Gernika, under which the historical freedoms of the Basque people were proclaimed.

Our journey will then take us to Hondarribia (Fuenterrabía), a delightful coastal town with a strong maritime identity, ancient city walls, and a charming historic quarter. You will have time to walk through its cobbled alleys, admire the colorful houses, and enjoy dinner in a setting full of character.

By the end of the day, we will arrive in San Sebastián, one of the jewels of northern Spain. Our hotel is usually located on Mount Igueldo, offering stunning panoramic views over the elegant city and its bay, beautifully illuminated at night.

Greca Tip: If time allows, indulge in a few pintxos, the Basque version of tapas, paired with a glass of local txakoli wine. San Sebastián is renowned for its gastronomy, and this is one of the best ways to savor its essence.

After a pleasant breakfast, we will begin the day by ascending the iconic Mount Igueldo, from where you will enjoy one of the most captivating panoramic views of the Bay of San Sebastián, framed by lush green hills and the vastness of the Cantabrian Sea. Our journey will then take us to the Miramar Palace, a former royal residence surrounded by enchanting gardens offering privileged views of the sea.

You will then have free time to enjoy the many charms of this refined coastal city: you may choose to relax on the expansive La Concha Beach, stroll along its elegant boulevards, or explore the Old Town, where the true essence of Basque culture comes to life.

During this day, we will treat you to a delightful pintxos experience—small masterpieces of local Basque cuisine—served with a traditional drink, in an authentically San Sebastián atmosphere.

In the afternoon, we will bid farewell to the Basque Country as we cross the border into French territory. Our day will conclude in the distinguished city of Bordeaux, the capital of France’s most prestigious wine region. We will arrive in the evening, and we recommend taking advantage of your first encounter with the city by enjoying a leisurely stroll through its historic center, where architectural elegance and a cosmopolitan ambiance blend seamlessly.

Greca Tip: In San Sebastián, don’t miss the chance to try a txangurro (spider crab) pintxo or the traditional cod pil-pil. And in Bordeaux, if time allows, visit the Place de la Bourse at night—its reflection on the water mirror creates a postcard-perfect scene.

After breakfast, you will visit the center of Bordeaux. It is known for its impressive architecture, ranging from historic buildings to modern structures. The historic center of Bordeaux is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features cobbled streets, charming squares, and magnificent buildings such as the Place de la Bourse and the Stone Bridge.

Here you will be surprised by the “water mirror” and we will walk through the old town with its pedestrian streets and its 11th-century cathedral.

You will have time to visit on your own La Cité Du Vin, which is an impressive interactive museum that allows you to learn about the history of wine and its production.

You will have free time later to walk and have lunch on the banks of the Garonne River, an area full of small restaurants.

After lunch time you will continue our route towards the Pyrenees.

We will arrive in Lourdes in the middle of the afternoon where we will have time to visit the sanctuary.

It is known worldwide for the apparitions of the Virgin Mary which are said to have occurred in 1858, when a young woman named Bernadette Soubirous claimed to have had visions of the Virgin in a grotto near the city.

After enjoying a carefully prepared breakfast, we will immerse ourselves in the enchanting landscapes of southern France, beginning our journey in the legendary city of Carcassonne. You will have time to explore and enjoy lunch in this medieval gem, renowned for its imposing fortified walls, majestic castle, and the picturesque historic quarter known as La Cité, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking through its cobbled streets feels like stepping into a different era.

We will then continue our route toward the Pyrenees Mountains, making a brief stop in Foix, a charming medieval town dominated by the impressive Castle of the Counts of Foix, standing tall as a silent guardian of its storied past. A stroll through its old town will allow you to appreciate its serene and noble atmosphere.

Our journey continues through majestic peaks and mountain scenery that remains snow-capped for much of the year. Surrounded by this untamed natural beauty, we will cross the border into Andorra, a small independent country where Catalan is the official language. Before reaching the capital, we’ll make a short stop at the Church of Sant Joan de Caselles, a 12th-century Romanesque gem harmoniously set in the mountainous landscape.

We will then arrive in Andorra la Vella, the lively capital of the Principality. You will have free time to explore its vibrant city center, famous for its dynamic shopping atmosphere and duty-free stores. Alternatively, you may choose to unwind at Caldea, the largest thermal spa in southern Europe. Dinner is included this evening in this charming city nestled in nature.

And for a true moment of serenity, immerse yourself in Caldea’s thermal waters while watching the Pyrenean peaks glow under the sunset—a true gift for body and soul.

After enjoying a delightful breakfast, you will have free time in Andorra, perfect for leisurely exploring its lively city center, discovering attractive products in its duty-free shops, or simply strolling through its mountain-lined streets while breathing in the fresh alpine air.

Following lunch, we will bid farewell to this small principality and venture into Catalan lands. As we travel, stunning mountain landscapes will accompany us to one of the most awe-inspiring sites in the region: the Monastery of Montserrat, a spiritual sanctuary nestled among unique rock formations. We will ascend to the monastery aboard the rack railway, which offers breathtaking panoramic views along the way (train ride included). You will have time to admire the beauty of this sacred place, home to the revered statue of the Virgin of Montserrat, affectionately known as La Moreneta, the patron saint of Catalonia.

After this enriching spiritual and visual experience, we continue our journey to the vibrant city of Barcelona, arriving in the late afternoon with time to begin soaking in the Mediterranean flair and cosmopolitan spirit of the Catalan capital.

Greca Tip: If you have the chance, try the herbal Licor de Montserrat, crafted by the Benedictine monks, or pick up a traditional sweet from one of the monastery’s local shops. Once in Barcelona, we recommend a first stroll along Passeig de Gràcia, where art, architecture, and style come together in perfect harmony.

After a delicious breakfast, we will begin the day with a panoramic tour of vibrant Barcelona, known as "the Catalan city". Considered one of the most fascinating European capitals, Barcelona opens up to the Mediterranean Sea, offering a unique blend of history, art, and modernity. In this charming city, we pay homage to the legacy of Gaudí and his unparalleled modernist architecture, while not forgetting the iconic Las Ramblas and the remnants of the World Expositions and the Olympic Games that have shaped its history.

The afternoon will be free for you to explore at your own pace, enjoying the endless options for culture, shopping, and entertainment that Barcelona has to offer.

In the evening, we will include a transfer to Maremagnum, an innovative entertainment and dining center located by the sea, near Plaza Colón. Here you can stroll through this lively area and enjoy a meal with a view of the sea at one of the many restaurants in the area.

Greca Tip: We recommend trying a “suquet de peix,” a delicious fish stew typical of the Catalan coast, perfect for enjoying while watching the sunset by the sea.

After enjoying an excellent breakfast, we will begin our journey southward, following the charming path of the Mediterranean coast. Our first stop will be the picturesque town of Peñíscola, a walled medieval gem perched on a small peninsula, surrounded by crystal-clear waters and wide golden beaches. You will have time to stroll through its historic center, crowned by the Castle of Pope Luna, and be captivated by its cobbled streets and stunning sea views.

We will then continue to the vibrant city of Valencia, a major Mediterranean port and the birthplace of the world-famous paella. We’ll arrive around lunchtime, and you may wish to take this opportunity to savor this iconic Valencian dish in its place of origin.

In the afternoon, before our departure, we will make a brief photo stop at the City of Arts and Sciences, a striking complex of avant-garde architecture that embodies the city's innovative and cultural spirit. Afterwards, we will resume our journey toward Madrid, where we expect to arrive between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m., ready to immerse ourselves in the unmatched energy of the Spanish capital.

Please, keep in mind that if the number of travelers from Valencia to Madrid is limited, the journey may be completed by high-speed train, a comfortable, modern, and efficient alternative.
