Dubrovnik means Oak Grove, due to the number of oak trees in the area. The city was dominated by the Byzantines, Venetians, Hungarians, Turks and Austrians.

Dubrovnik was also one of the cities that suffered the most in the war against Serbia, on December 6, 1991 more than 2000 bombs fell on it, that is why most of its houses are newly built. The old city is surrounded by a great medieval wall that houses 16 towers and is one of the great attractions of the city.
