Excursion Itinerary: Cruise To The Island Of Koufonisi From Makris Gialos

FROM MAKRYS GIALOS TO THE ISLAND OF KOUFONISI
FROM MAKRYS GIALOS TO THE ISLAND OF KOUFONISI

Your cruise boat will depart from the port of Makrys Gialos, a lovely seaside village in Ierapetra, at about 10.30am and head to Koufonisi island in the Libyan Sea.  You will be dazzled by the steep rocky shorelines, the caves with white and yellow rocks and unearthly dunes.

Koufonisi was known in antiquity as Lefki (meaning white) because of the white limestone and marl reflected in the sunlight.  Its current name Koufonisi (meaning hollow island) may owe its name to the many caves and caverns carved out by the sea and the wind or to the rats, called "koufa" by the locals.  It is the largest of a cluster of five islands and, although uninhabited now, it is full of ruins that point to human activity from the Early Minoan times.  Due to the significant findings unearthed on the island the locals also call it Delos of Crete. These findings include a stone theater, a settlement with an eight room impressive villa and a Roman public baths complex, which are currently not open to the public.  The island was also an important hub for sponge fishing and porphyry production, an extremely valuable purple dye.

Your cruise boat will moor in a wind protected beach, where you will disembark to explore the island.  There are 36 beaches with fine white sand and emerald blue waters.  It was in one of these, Hiliaderfia, where a British yacht carrying Prince Charles and Princess Diana anchored years ago.

If you feel like hiking there is a path leading from the harbour to the other end of the island, through small fields and barren expanses dotted with drystone walls.

A little north of the trail that connects the ancient theater and the ancient temple and lighthouse, there is the desert region Elia (olive), a really strange phenomenon in Greece, which is covered by sand and dunes with bushes.

Your departure is scheduled for about 5.00pm but please make sure that you ask the crew about the exact time.

Greca Tip: Remeber to pack extra towels or consider buying a beach umbrella before you get on the boat.
