Excursion Itinerary: Delphi & Meteora From Athens

Leaving Athens, the landscape begins to change from arid to majestic and imposing, passing through the area of Thebes, to the foothills of Mount Parnassus and Arahova.
On the lower southern slopes of M. Parnassos there are a pair of hills called the Fedriades, and it is here where the site of Delphi, the center of the ancient world or "navel" of the Earth is located.
Delphi dedicated to god Apollo, the patron of music and guardian of the sacred laws of Zeus, hosted the Oracle, the priestess whose prophesies influenced states and individuals alike. Apollo spoke through her in an incomprehensible language, which was then interpreted by the priests of the temple.
You will walk along the Sacred Way winding up to the temple of Apollo, which was decorated with innumerable offerings made by Greek and foreign cities. You will also visit the Treasury of the Athenians, one of the most important buildings as well as the sanctuary dedicated to Athena Pronaia. The museum, one of the most important in Greece, houses finds, such as the "omphalos" dating back to the Roman period, friezes depecting Hercules' exploits and the impressive "bronze charioteer", a masterpiece of Greek sculpture which still today day does not cease to impress the visitor.
After this astonishing tour, you will leave the slopes of Mount Parnassus and head towards the plain of Thessaly where the city of Kalambaka is located.
Arrival in Kalambaka, dinner and accommodation.
Greca Tip: In your free time visit the sanctuary consecrated to Athena Pronaia.

Early in the morning you will visit Meteora, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1988. Meteora is the place where the natural beauty of the region is combined with the eternal monasteries suspended or 'meteora' on top of the huge rocks.
The first monastery "The Great Meteoro" was built by Saint Athanasius after being expelled from Mount Athos, while trying to escape from his pursuers. At the moment there are six monasteries in use, five of which host monks and one of them nuns.
On your way to Athens you will make a brief stop at Thermopylae, where the statue of the Spartan King Leonidas I stands, in honour of the famous battle against the Persians in 480 B.C.
You will return to Athens in the early evening and we will drop you off at your hotel or the closest one.
Greca Tip: There is a dress code to the Monasteries - sleeveless clothing and shorts above the knee are not allowed. Skirts, trousers and shawls are available at the entrance of each Monastery in case visitors do not have extra clothing to cover themselves with.
