FROM ATHENS TO MYKONOS - NAVIGATING THE AEGEAN LIKE ODYSSEUS

Early in the morning, after a tasty breakfast, one of our private vehicles will be waiting for you along with your assistant to transfer you to the port of Piraeus, where you will board the ferry to the famous island of Mykonos. The crossing is scheduled at the ideal time of the day so as to enjoy the sun on deck and marvel at the deep blue of the Aegean Sea. The chosen name is said to be "the heap of stones" or the "rocky place", but a later version states that the island's name is connected to the hero Mykono, son of the king of Delos, Anius.

Upon your arrival on the island, one of our English speaking representatives will be waiting to welcome you, transfer you to your hotel and introduce you to this famous island.

The rest of the day is free for you to relax and immerse yourself in the 'slow' way of life of the islanders.

Greca Tip: You can select a fast ferry in step 1 of 3 of your reservation.

MYKONOS: RELAX, SUN, BEACH AND HISTORY
4
MYKONOS: RELAX, SUN, BEACH AND HISTORY

Free day to enjoy this magnificent island. Mykonos is the meeting point of the international "jet set", famous for its wonderful beaches, the dazzling shops and vibrant nightlife.

The island's cuisine is mainly Mediterranean, which makes vegetables and olive oil a basic part of the daily menu, as well as certain spices (oregano, basil ...) and on many occasions, fish and seafood.

Just a few minutes away by ferry, there is the historic island of Delos, which, according to Greek mythology, was the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. This small island, inhabited since 3000 B.C., was one of the most important cultural centers of antiquity.

Greca tip: We recommend hiring a car or a motorcycle to venture out on the island, experience the local customs and feel yourself like a Mykonian.

FROM MYKONOS TO MAGICAL SANTORINI

FROM MYKONOS TO MAGICAL SANTORINI

Having enjoyed a tasty breakfast, appreciating life like a Greek, one of our vehicles will pick you up at the agreed time to drive you to the port where you will continue on to your next destination, the island which is an inexhaustible source of inspiration, Santorini. Approaching the island, you will have the opportunity to admire the capital city of Fira, with its white houses overhanging the cliffside and facing the volcano.

Upon your arrival, one of our English-speaking representatives will be waiting for you at the port to welcome you, direct you to your hotel and comment a little more on the highlights of this picturesque island. The rest of the day is free to wander through the narrow streets.

Greca Tip: Sit back and enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world from one of the coffee shops located at Oia.

Optionally, you can choose to go on a dazzling sailboat tour that comprises visits to the small islands inside the caldera, Nea and Palea Kameni, with the hot springs of green and yellow waters. All the time, the capital city of Fira will never be far away but will faithfully accompany us throughout the cruise tour.

Greca Tip: We also recommend you rent a vehicle in order to get to know more about this island, taste its wine and its excellent local cuisine.

PALERMO - CEFALU - TAORMINA - CATANIA
8
PALERMO - CEFALU - TAORMINA - CATANIA

After a buffet breakfast, you will depart for Cefalu, meaning head or top, on the northern coast of Sicily, a former fishing village which is also home to a breathtaking Norman Cathedral, famous for its Mosaic of Christ Pantocractor – a stunning Byzantine mosaic that’s considered as one of the most important pieces of religious artwork in Sicily, built by Roger II, the Norman in 1131 and now a World Heritage Site. Take a stroll to the city centre and down main street to reach the Cathedral and the medieval wash-house built in the rock where you will be thrown back in time, among songs screamed by the Sicilian laundresses, busy in their daily ritual.

You will continue to Taormina, lunch along the way in a local restaurant. Then we will have the afternoon in Taormina, charming city called "the pearl of the Ionian Sea" praised by Goethe in his book Italian Journey and a mandatory stop on the Grand Tour of the young European aristocracy. You will enjoy time at leisure for shopping or walking through its tiny streets. There you will have the possibility to visit the Greek-Roman Theatre on your own, with its spectacular view of Giardini Naxos and Etna volcano.

At the agreed time the tour will continue to Catania.

Accommodation, dinner and overnight at hotel in Catania.

Greca Tip: You can admire the blue sea of the Messina Strait with the typical lemon granita (shaved ice), or the famous mezza con panna al caffè, a half glass of coffee-flavoured granita and cream.

9
CATANIA – SYRACUSE – CATANIA

After your breakfast you will depart for Syracuse, the most important city of Magna Graecia. You will visit the archaeological area “Neapolis” including the famous Greek Theatre, that could accommodate up to 15,000 spectators and still used for an annual festival running from the middle of May to the end of June; the Latomie of the Paradise, the old stone quarries that used to serve a rather sinister purpose: 7,000 Athenian prisoners of war were kept here after the Sicilian Expedition in 413 BC and the “Orecchio di Dyionisio”, a 20m-high, slender pointed arch cut into the rock face that develops inwards for about 65m. The name was given by Caravaggio during his visit in 1608 and legend would tell us that it was used by Dionysius the Tyrant as a prison for his bitterest enemies. The excellent cathedral-like acoustics meant that he could hear their conversations from outside.

You will continue to the island of Ortigia, measuring just 1km by 500 metres, but packed with over 2,500 years of history.  Architectural styles vary widely, encompassing Greek and Roman remains, Mediaeval Norman buildings and a great deal of baroque. You will see the small baroque old city centre of Syracuse, visit the Cathedral, which is built upon the site of the Temple of Minerva, the legendary Arethusa Fountain and the Temple of Apollo, supposedly the first great Doric temple of its kind in Sicily. You will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Ortigia and in the afternoon you will return to Catania for a nice walking tour. During the tour in Catania, you will stroll through the city centre with your professional guide, who will charm you with the history of the city.

Dinner and Overnight at your hotel in Catania.

Greca Tip: In Ortigia you can find cheeses, hams and cured meats of the very best quality, many of which, especially those produced in Sicily, you will find nowhere else.

10
CATANIA – MODICA – RAGUSA

Today, and after your breakfast, you will travel to Modica, a town nestling at the bottom of a gorge. Like the other towns in the Val di Noto, it was badly damaged in the 1693 earthquake and largely rebuilt in Sicilian Baroque style. Due to its architecture it has been recognized as providing an  outstanding testimony to the exuberant genius and final flowering of Baroque art in Europe. Modica is a town with an ancient history, nicknamed "the city of 100 churches" and some of its most representative monuments, such as the Cathedral of San Pietro and the Church of San Giorgio, have been proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The tour will then continue with a visit inside the Artisan chocolate workshop. Modica is custodian of a 400 year tradition of Sicilian chocolate-making. Being part of the Spanish kingdom for so many years meant that Sicily was often one of the first recipients of the new foodstuffs being brought back from South America. Cacao was one of these and today Modica still specialises in making granulous chocolate, often flavoured with chilli pepper, cinnamon or vanilla, that is based on Aztec methods and recipes. At the workshop you will have the chance to discover the techniques leading to the production of an amazing quality of "the Modican's chocolate". You will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, followed by free time to explore the town at your own pace and indulge in some shopping.

You will continue to Ragusa, where you will check in at your hotel, have dinner and relax. Alternatively, you may join an optional "by night" visit to the ancient city of “Ragusa Ibla", cradle of the Sicilian baroque, with its Cathedral and the public garden “Giardino Ibleo”. In Ragusa Ibla the sight of houses, churches and civic palazzi piled on top of each other and clinging to the walls of the gorge, is really quite breathtaking. The optional excursion will take place with a minimum number of participants and a supplement is to be paid on the spot.

Overnight stay at your hotel in Ragusa.

Greca Tip: In the Piazza Duomo you can enjoy your drink at one of the outdoor tables or try the special ice-cream flavours in the most popular gelateria of the region, Gelati DiVini.

11
RAGUSA – PIAZZA ARMERINA – AGRIGENTO

Buffet breakfast at your hotel and departure to Piazza Armerina to visit the worldwide known Villa Romana del Casale, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to its well-preserved mosaics depicting mythological themes and hunting scenes.

You will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant with a special menu chosen to give you the opportunity to taste the local culinary dishes. You will then head to Agrigento, a hillside town famous for its magnificent Valley of the Temples, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is not really a valley, as the site is located on a promontory above the sea, and its archaeological park is composed of 12 temples and built in the time of ancient Greece, from the 6th century to the 2nd century BC. You will be guided though the Valley, including a tour of the Temple of Concordia, which is in almost perfectly preserved condition, the Temples of Juno and Heracles.

Upon arrival in Agrigento you will check in at your hotel, have dinner and spend the night.

Greca Tip: The Grillo wine, known as Contea di Sclafani, is produced around Agrigento, making it the perfect wine to accompany your meals or the perfect gift for you and your loved ones.

12
AGRIGENTO – SELINUNTE – MONREALE - PALERMO

After a delicious buffet breakfast, you will head to Selinunte, beautifully located, sitting on a high plain and overlooking the sea.  Here lies the largest archaeological park in Europe, with an area of 270 hectares.  On a par with pretty much anything found in Greece itself, Selinunte has lain abandoned for nearly 2,500 years, its numerous temples, its acropolis and its agora in dignified ruins. After a brief visit to the “Eastern Hill”, you will continue to the large Doric temple known as Temple E, which is in the best state of conservation of the entire archaeological area, and finally to Temple G, a massively ambitious project that may never have been finished. It would have been one of the biggest temples of the ancient world, and the mound of masonry is still impressive today.

You will then proceed to a typical farmhouse, that produces olive oil, for an oil tasting experience and a delicious lunch. Your next destination will be the capital of Sicily, Palermo. You will first visit the town of Monreale, situated at a panoramic viewpoint, on a hill, only a few kilometres away from Palermo.  Monreale would be a fairly non-descript town were it not for the presence of one of the world’s most stunning architectural treasures: the Duomo. Monreal's Cathedral is one of the most beautiful monuments of the world with its Moorish architecture and some of the finest mosaics depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Wave after wave of this dazzling beauty culminates in the colossal representation of Christ Pantocrator. You will also visit the Benedictine Cloister in Arab-Norman style, which features a huge central cloister, Arabic arches and 108 pairs of marble columns.  It is an oasis of peace and you will feel like being in the garden of a rich man’s house in Egypt or Damascus of yesteryear. Behind the cloister, towards the “Belvedere”, you will have stunning views over the fertile valley of the Golden Shell towards Palermo.

Finally, arrival at your hotel in Palermo, dinner and overnight stay.

Greca Tip: In Monreale you may try the traditional bread, a very popular product throughout the province, and finally the Monreale biscuits, such as the “Reginelle” with sesame seeds and the “Algerians” with icing sugar.

13
PALERMO CITY TOUR

This morning will be dedicated to the historical centre of the town, one of the largest in Europe. You will visit Martorana Church, Piazza Bellini, Piazza Pretoria, “I Quattro Canti di Città - the four corners”, with a pleasant walk along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the ancient “Cassaro”, Piazza Bologni, the Cathedral (internal visit) and the outside of the Norman Palace. You will have the chance to taste Palermo’s street food at a typical local market.

In the afternoon you will be free to roam the city at your leisure or, for those who are interested, you will have the opportunity to go on a panoramic optional tour to the surrounding areas of Palermo: the “Palazzina Cinese” close to the green park of “la Favorita”  and Mondello, an ancient fishermen's village with a wonderful sandy beach, where you can enjoy a delicious ice cream. The tour can take place with a minimum number of participants and a supplement is to be paid on the spot.

Return to your hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

Greca Tip: You may also join a guided tour of the largest opera house in Italy and the third largest in Europe, Il Teatro Massimo, and explore the history and intrigue of the theatre.

PALERMO - CIAO ITALIA
