Excursion Itinerary: Tour To Mount Olympus & Dion From Thessaloniki

TOUR TO DION AND MOUNT OLYMPUS
TOUR TO DION AND MOUNT OLYMPUS

In the morning, at around 08.00, you will set out for your tour to Dion.

You will visit the archaeological site of a fortified city and marvel at the marble statues, the mosaics and the various artefacts that have been brought to light since 1982, when the excavation commenced.  The old theater with the perfect acoustics is still in use today. The modern museum hosts a number of important statues, collection of various objects from the daily life of the people and its special feature, hydraulis or water organ, which is the first organ of its kind found in Greece and the oldest found to date anywhere in the world. The "Villa of Dionysus", which takes its name from the large mosaic depicting the god that covers the floor of the banqueting room, is located in the building next to it.

Your next stop will be Mount Olympus, the mountain known as the residence of the 12 Gods of the Greek Mythology.  You will enjoy a 20-minute trekking through Enipeas Gorge, above the village of Litochoro. The path is magical; walk past water torrents, picturesque wooden bridges and canyons with pine, beech and ash trees. This is the territory of the Olympian gods and more specifically the "folds of the mountain", as described by Homer, where their glorious palaces were erected.

Our day trip ends at the picturesque village of Litochoro, where you will enjoy lunch in a welcoming traditional restaurant. Litochoro is situated right at the foot of Olympus and is the main starting point for the various trekking paths that lead to Mytikas, the highest peak of Olympus.

After visiting Litochoro and at around 4:30 p.m you will return to Thessaloniki.

Do not miss out on this opportunity to visit the second highest mountain in the Balkans and the most mythical of all!

Greca Tip: Wander in the old traditional quarter of the town of Litochoro, along narrow lanes, small squares and past houses built in the typical macedonian style.
