Excursion Itinerary: Etna And Alcantara Gorge

Your excursion will commence at about 09:00 hs and the pick up will take place from 08:00 at one of the meeting points confirmed at the time of your reservation.

Your first stop will be Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe at 3,345 meters and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Through the centuries, its eruptions have shaped the volcano’s slopes, forming unique landscapes of lava and ice. The area is now an enormous nature reserve, full of hiking trails. More than 25% of Sicily's population lives on Etna's slopes, and it is the main source of income for the island, both from agriculture, due to its rich volcanic soil, and tourism. The famous 'Silvestre' craters are two inactive craters formed as a result of the Mount Etna eruption of 1892 and are situated just a few steps from the Rifugio Sapienza in Nicolosi, at about 1,900 m above sea level.  Together with your knowledgeable guide and at 2000 meters above sea level, you will walk through the terrain of ancient and recent craters and, at midday, you will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant on the slopes of Etna.  Later on, with torches and helmets in hand, you will explore one of the fascinating lava caves and will admire the volcanic landscape and the rare natural beauty.

Your next stop will be the beautiful and natural site of the Alcantara gorges, one of the must-see attractions of Sicily. These gorges are real canyons made of black lava walls up to 50 meters high and with the typical shape of a prism that the rocks have taken during the cooling process. The name of Alcantara, which is the same for both the river and the entire valley, dates back to the Arab period and comes from the word Al Qantarah, referring to a Roman bridge, so well constructed, that it can withstand the numerous and abundant river floods.  Alcantara gorges are open all year round as the available paths can be accessed even during the flood period.

At the end of this spectacular day, you will return to Catania at about 18:00 hs.

Important: It is important to equip yourself with hiking shoes, long trousers, a windproof jacket, a rucksack and a water bottle!

Greca Tip: Please remember to bring glasses to keep the flying grit out of your eyes as well as some snacks as food up on the mountain can be overpriced.
